Faculty Committee
Welcome to the USC Faculty Committee! The Academic Senate and its committees are critical players in the governance of UC San Diego, providing advice and recommendations on academic matters to the President and Provost.
Academic Senate
The Academic Senate is the governing body of the university. It comprises all full-time faculty members and meets twice a month to discuss matters related to academic policy. The academic senate approves new degree programs and sets standards for student admissions, graduation requirements, and faculty evaluation procedures.
The USC Faculty Committee consists of three faculty members appointed by each department chairperson with the approval from their dean or vice president (for new departments). The committee meets regularly with representatives from SACUBO (Student Activities Center Building Operations) responsible for facility maintenance issues such as repairs or upgrades that may impact classroom space availability during scheduled events in our classrooms/labs/auditoriums on campus.
Academic Program and Curriculum
The Academic Senate, a committee of faculty members, is responsible for overseeing curriculum and academic programs. The Academic Program and Curriculum Committee (APCC) reviews all proposed changes to existing courses, degree programs, and minors. It also develops new methods and majors.
The APCC is chaired by the dean of graduate studies or designee, who serves as secretary to the APCC. Members include:
- Three faculty members from each college (six total).
- One student representative from each college.
- Two representatives from Student Life.
- Two representatives from Athletics.
- One representative from Human Resources.
- One representative from Information Technology Services.
- One representative from Facilities Management & Planning Services.
- Every spring semester before commencement exercises, a student member-at-large is elected by their peers through an election.
Technology in Learning
The Technology in Learning program is a collaborative effort between faculty, students and the university to promote and support the use of technology in teaching, learning and research. The program helps faculty integrate technology into their courses through workshops on various technologies such as video production or social media tools; it also provides access to equipment such as cameras or microphones for use during class time.
The Technology in Learning Committee works with other campus groups like the Office of Distance Education & eLearning (ODEEL) and student organizations like Student Media Productions (SMP) to provide opportunities for students who want to get involved with creating digital content related to their courses or research projects.
Arts, Sports & Events
The Arts, Sports & Events Committee organizes and coordinates events for the campus and community. The committee is composed of faculty, staff and students who are responsible for the following:
- Art exhibitions
- Concerts and performances
- Sports events, including intramural sports and special events like the annual Homecoming Parade, occur on campus.

The USC Faculty Committee comprises faculty members from all schools at UC San Diego responsible for providing guidance, direction and recommendations to the President and Provost on matters relating to academic programs and faculty affairs.
The committee’s membership includes representatives from each school plus two students from the Graduate Student Association.
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is a public research university in La Jolla, California. It was founded in 1960 by William Pereira as part of his vision for developing a new model for modern universities that emphasized interdisciplinary education and collaboration among scholars across disciplines. Today it offers over 200 undergraduate majors across its eight undergraduate colleges (Arts & Humanities; Biological Sciences; Engineering; Letters & Science; Jacobs School of Engineering; Physical Sciences; Social Ecology), several graduate programs, including law, medicine and business administration. The university has been ranked as one of America’s top 10 public universities by U.S News & World Report since 2007.
