Impact
USC researchers are inventing new solutions and creating new knowledge.
USC is all about invention. From the moment you step onto campus, you’ll see that we’re a place where people create new knowledge and find new ways to communicate.
Our researchers are exploring all areas, from quantum physics to neuroscience to artificial intelligence. They’re developing solutions for everything from climate change to cancer treatment–and they’re doing it right here at USC!

Tools for creating knowledge.
WHY: The university is about invention, finding new ways to communicate and creating new knowledge.
USC is about invention, finding new ways to communicate and creating new knowledge. The university has been at the forefront of research for over a century, with some of the most renowned scientists in history coming out of its classrooms.
Students at USC are encouraged to work together in research labs on campus, where they can apply their classroom learning to real-world problems that benefit society. Students also have access to cutting-edge facilities like the Interactive Media Lab (IML) and Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), allowing them to explore technology while developing skills employers need today.*
HOW: Develop and patent the new technology
USC has an impressive record of developing innovative technologies. More than 40 start-ups have spun off from the university since 2009, including Turo (a car rental service), Pause Pod (a portable nap pod) and CellScope (an iPhone microscope).
The USC Office of Technology Management supports faculty members who want to patent their discoveries or create start-ups based on their research. It also helps students who wish to commercialize their ideas into viable businesses by connecting them with mentors and investors.
In addition, USC’s Office of Intellectual Property Development offers assistance with licensing agreements between inventors and companies interested in using their intellectual property rights–like patents or trademarks–for commercial purposes.
WHO: Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to work together in research labs on campus.
USC encourages students, faculty and staff to work together in research labs on campus. Students can work on projects or with faculty members to develop new knowledge. The benefits for both parties are numerous: for students, it is an opportunity to learn by doing; for faculty, it provides an opportunity for teaching and mentoring.
