Managing Costs & Financial Aid

The University of Texas at Austin is a great school that offers many student opportunities. The university is known for its high-quality education and excellent professors but it can also be expensive. Fortunately, there are ways to save money while attending UT Austin—and even manage your finances while in college.

Here are some tips on managing costs and financial aid at UT Austin:

Tuition Rates

The cost of attendance measures all expenses you can expect to incur as a student at UT Austin. The total price includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses (clothing), transportation, etc. Students are billed for each semester’s charges during the summer preceding that fall term.

The amount you pay depends on your residency status (in-state vs. out-of-state) and what type of program you are enrolled in: traditional undergraduate, graduate, law, medical school or pharmacy school). It also depends on which campus you choose (Austin or San Antonio) and whether or not your degree is online only.

Cost of Attendance (COA)

The following table shows the estimated COA for full-time undergraduate students attending UT Austin:

Tuition Rebates

You may be eligible for a tuition rebate if you are a Texas resident and have been accepted to UT Austin. You must also have been awarded a scholarship or grant from one of the following sources:

  • The University of Texas at Austin (scholarships, fellowships, grants)
  • Any other public university in Texas (scholarships, fellowships and grants)

If you meet all three criteria above, your family will receive an automatic 25% reduction on out-of-state tuition rates for each academic year they qualify for this benefit.

Tuition Reductions

The University of Texas at Austin offers several tuition reductions for qualifying students. The amount and type of reduction will vary depending on the student’s status at UT Austin, such as whether they are an undergraduate or graduate student and live on campus or commute from home.

Tuition reductions are available to international students who meet specific criteria and are not available to all international students. These include:

  • Full-time study abroad program (for example, studying at one of UT Austin’s off-campus centres)
  • Graduate assistantship (GA) appointment

Compare UT Tuition

If you’re an out-of-state student, the cost of tuition will be higher than it is for students who live in Texas. However, other factors affect how much your education will be:

  • Your residency status and how long you’ve lived in the state.
  • Whether or not you qualify for financial aid based on your family’s income level (the FAFSA).

Suppose you want to establish residency in Texas and lower your tuition fees from out-of-state rates down to those paid by Texas residents. In that case, specific requirements must be met before applying for this status change with UT Austin Admissions Office staff members.

Determining Texas Residency

As a prospective student, you may wonder if paying in-state tuition at UT Austin is possible. The answer is yes–but it depends on your situation and how long you’ve lived in Texas.

To determine whether or not you qualify as a Texas resident for tuition purposes, the university will look at several factors:

  • How long have you been residing in Texas?
  • What type of housing do you live in?
  • Where do your parents live (if applicable)?
  • Do they work here? If so, where do they work?

Summer 2023 Tuition and Discounted Courses

Summer 2023 Tuition

  • Tuition for summer 2023 will be $1,813. This includes all fees related to registration, housing and dining.
  • Discounted courses are available at a reduced cost for students who meet specific requirements. The availability of these discounted courses varies by campus; some majors may only have access to this option at some campuses.

Paying Your Tuition

To pay your tuition, you have a few different options. You can pay in full, or if you’d like to spread out the cost over time, we offer payment plans that allow students to make monthly payments on their balance.

The University of Texas at Austin offers two types of payment plans:

  • One-Time Payment Plan – Students can make one large payment for their tuition and fees (including housing). The deadline to sign up for this option is March 1st each year, after which it will be available August 1st when open registration begins again.
  • Automatic Payment Plan – This plan allows students who enrol in classes during spring/summer semesters or fall/spring semesters that qualify as part of their financial aid package an opportunity to pay off their charges automatically through their bank account each month until all invoices are paid off completely.

Financial Aid and scholarships

Financial aid is available to help you pay for your education. Several types of financial assistance exist, including grants, scholarships and student loans. Financial aid can cover tuition and fees, books and supplies, food, housing, transportation and other educational expenses.
