U of M Students
The University of Minnesota is the state’s flagship public university. It’s located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was founded in 1851. The school’s Golden Gophers sports teams compete at the NCAA Division 1 level and have won 19 national championships since 1903. Though it has a large undergraduate enrollment of 36,517 students, all of whom live on campus for their first two years at least (and sometimes beyond), the UofM also has a diverse graduate student population that includes over 10,000 master’s degree candidates as well as doctoral candidates who study within 50 different departments across nine colleges such as the College of Liberal Arts or College of Science & Engineering. The school offers more than 300 programs across six schools: Liberal Arts & Sciences; Architecture & Planning; Design; Education & Human Development; Engineering; Nursing; Pharmacy (plus dentistry).

Once an applicant’s status has changed from “applied” to another level (such as accepted or rejected), they will receive an email notification via their University email account from [email protected]. The Office of Admissions will also post updates about admissions decisions on its website at www.admissions.umn.edu/apply/status-checker/.

Admissions Decision Process
The admissions decision process is a rigorous one. It begins with submitting your application and ends with receiving an acceptance letter or rejection email.
- Time Frame: The time frame for decisions varies by major and program, but most applicants will hear back from us within 4-6 weeks after completing their applications. If you haven’t heard from us by then, please get in touch with our office at [insert phone number].
- Check Your Status: You can check the status of your application by logging into My UMN and clicking on “My Application” under “Applications & Financial Aid.” You will see a list of all pending applications; if yours appears on this list with no status update, please get in touch with our office immediately so we can help resolve any issues that may be preventing us from making the final determination on your admission (such as missing transcripts).

Make sure to apply by the deadline!
The deadline to apply for some programs is May 1, while others have a later deadline. Be sure to check the requirements for each program and use them by their respective deadlines!
Deadlines are not negotiable, so do it before it’s too late. If you miss one, there may be no way to get back into school other than starting over with another degree or significant.
