The University of Minnesota is a public research university in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The University of Minnesota system’s flagship campus is one of the largest universities in the United States. The university originated from land grants made by the federal government to several states after the American Revolutionary War. It was founded as a land-grant institution under President Franklin Buchanan’s “New Education” initiative during the 1850s. It began as a preparatory school called St. Anthony’s Academy; however, by 1851, its first class graduated from what was then known as Minneapolis State Normal School (now known as Hamline University).
