The University of Minnesota was founded in 1851, making it the first University in the Northwest Territory. It’s also the first public University to offer a Ph.D. program west of the Mississippi River. The Princeton Review has ranked it as one of America’s best colleges for 14 consecutive years.
The school has had some notable achievements over its long history–including being named one of America’s best colleges by The Princeton Review for 14 consecutive years–but its most impressive accomplishment is that it survived being destroyed by fire just 20 years after it opened! In 1896, an electrical storm struck campus, knocking out power throughout much of Minneapolis-St. Paul: Within hours, fires broke out across town due to malfunctioning street lamps (a common problem at that time). These two events combined caused widespread damage throughout Minneapolis-St Paul; however, despite having no electricity or water supply during this period due to broken pipes caused by falling trees during solid winds from earlier storms (which also resulted in several deaths), none of these events hindered either academic life or daily operations at any campus buildings except one: Northrop Memorial Auditorium where graduation ceremonies were held earlier that year had burned down entirely due.
