Harvard University, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, has more than 18,000 undergraduate students and more than 10,000 graduate students. It is a private Ivy League university with campuses in Cambridge and Boston.
Harvard offers a variety of undergraduate degree programs, including Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Education (MED) and Doctorate degrees.
Undergraduate Degree Programs
Harvard offers over 80 undergraduate arts, humanities, sciences and engineering undergraduate programs. If you’re interested in attending Harvard University as an undergraduate student, it’s essential to remember that there are some requirements you must meet before applying.
For example:
- You must have completed at least two years of college-level work with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale (or equivalent). If your high school does not use grades as part of its grading system and instead uses rank or class standing as a measure of success, then we require you to submit an official transcript showing class rank or standing alongside other standardized test scores such as SAT I/II/III or ACT (if applicable).
- Applicants must also have taken either SAT I/II/III tests (or ACT) unless they have been granted an exception by our Admissions Committee based on prior performance in academic subjects such as A.P. courses taken while still in high school.
The Bachelor of Science degree is a more math and science-focused program than the Bachelor of Arts. You must take four years of math, three years of natural sciences (biology, chemistry and physics), two years of engineering sciences, and one year each in computer science or applied mathematics. The B.S. also includes a foreign language requirement (Spanish, French or Latin).
The B.S. offers more career opportunities than an A.B. since many employers prefer applicants with technical skills over those who only have liberal arts degrees. Additionally, an undergraduate degree in any field at Harvard makes you more competitive when applying for graduate school programs such as law school or medical school; however, some graduate schools only accept applicants with specialized training outside their undergraduate field, so research this before applying!

If you’re interested in studying at Harvard University but don’t know where to start, here’s what you need to know about these two programs:
The B. Arch. The degree is a five-year program that requires students to complete courses in design and theory and electives from across the university’s schools and departments. Students must also complete a senior thesis, which may be an independent project or part of their studio work for one of their regular classes (more about this later).
When it comes time for your final year at Harvard GSD, you will choose one of three areas: architecture, urbanism, and landscape architecture.
The Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is a four-year program designed to give you the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in your chosen field, whether civil engineering or computer science.
The requirements for admission are as follows:
- You must have completed one year (30 credits) of study at another institution before entering HKS. If this is not possible due to transfer credit restrictions at your current institution, then we encourage you to reach out directly with questions about how we can accommodate any exceptional circumstances you might encounter along the way–we would love nothing more than for everyone who applies here!
