Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1636 and named after John Harvard, the institution has grown to become one of the most prestigious schools in the world, with an undergraduate enrollment of over 20,000 students and a faculty that includes 79 Nobel Laureates.

Harvard was established by a colonial legislature at Old South Church in Boston on October 28, 1636, as New College; its first president was Henry Dunster, who served until 1639 when he was replaced by Thomas Shepard Jr., son-in-law of Rev. John Cotton (later President). The school moved to Newtowne, which later became Cambridge by 1638, where it operated under various names, including Collegiate School, until its current name “Harvard College” was adopted in 1782 when it moved back into Boston proper at Harvard Yard (now Harvard Square).

To apply for Harvard University, students must:
  • Be at least 16 years old and have yet to pass their 26th birthday by July 1 of the year they plan to enter College or Graduate School.
  • Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (with immigration status confirmed by an official government document). As an international student, you must also meet additional requirements described in this section on international applicants.
  • Have graduated from high school or earned a GED certificate within three months after completing secondary education; or have earned 24 college credits with at least two semesters remaining before graduation from a regionally accredited college or university when applying during the first year; or be enrolled in a degree program at any college/university following high school graduation that Harvard University Admissions**//ENDWRITE has approved

You can submit your application through the Common Application, which allows students from more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide (and beyond) to apply with one form. The deadline for most applications is November 1 of each year; however, some programs have earlier deadlines or no deadline, so check before submitting!

It was founded in 1636, making it the oldest corporation (chartered by England’s King Charles I) and university in the United States.
