Faculty and Staff

Harvard University faculty and staff are a diverse group. They come from all over the world, and they work in a variety of fields. Faculty members teach classes, conduct research, advise students, do administrative work and more. Staff members perform many different tasks, including serving food at Harvard dining halls (or running them), providing campus security services, and working in offices across Harvard’s campuses.

Harvard University has over 3,000 faculty members who teach classes, conduct research, advise students, do administrative work, and manage endowments for specific schools or departments.

Administrative and Professional Staff

Administrative and professional staff members are the people who keep Harvard’s academic and research operations running smoothly. They include accountants, attorneys, human resources professionals, information technology experts, librarians and archivists, medical professionals (including physicians), security officers and police officers on campus 24/7 to ensure the safety of all community members.

These professional roles include:

  • Administrative staff who manage daily operations at the University; for example, finance staff who keep track of how much money we make or spend each year; facilities management teams that maintain buildings; human resources professionals who help us recruit new faculty members or employees

Academic Staff

The Academic Staff is made up of faculty, research staff and lecturers. Faculty are those whose primary responsibility is teaching or research. Research staff carry out research projects for the University or external funding agencies but need teaching duties in their own right. Lecturers are appointed to teach many students on short-term contracts (usually 1-3 years). Teaching fellows are postdoctoral researchers whom Harvard University has awarded fellowships to pursue independent research projects during their tenure as fellows at Harvard University.

Harvard College Faculty & Administrators

Harvard University employs many administrators who help run various aspects of its operations, such as financial aid or admissions processes for undergraduates (and graduate students). These are not faculty members but staff members who work under Dean Rakesh Khurana–the head administrator at Harvard College–to ensure everything runs smoothly on campus.
