class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To apply for financial aid, complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)\u00a0<strong>by March 1<\/strong>. You can do this online at fafsa.ed.gov or through the state\u2019s application system, which is often easier than filing a federal one.<\/p><p>Once you\u2019ve completed your FAFSA, it will be reviewed by UC and matched up with information from other sources\u2013your state department of education, for example\u2013to determine how much money your family can expect from various aid programs like grants or scholarships. The expected contribution is determined by subtracting any merit-based scholarships from your annual income and dividing that number by 2 (for an independent student). For example, if your family earns $100,000 per year and there are no other sources of income (savings or investments), then their expected contribution would be $50,000. To calculate your actual cost for attending UC Berkeley for one year:<\/p><ul><li>Cost = 1\/2 ($100k \u2013 $0) = 1\/2 x 100k = 50k per year<\/li><\/ul><p>Because there are four semesters during each academic year at UCB\u2013fall semester (September through December), winter semester (January through April), spring semester (May through August) and summer session\u2013you have eight months out of every twelve where tuition isn\u2019t being paid. This means we must divide our total expenses over 12 months instead of 10, resulting in an average monthly payment amount of just under\u00a0<strong>$5K<\/strong>!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-85bb561 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\"
