Pre-Order Books
Pre-Order Books
These are the books you’re going to need for your classes. If you’re like me, this is the most exciting part of being a student–getting new books! But there are a few things we need to know before we start ordering them.
First of all, What is “pre-order?” Pre-order means that instead of waiting until after finals week (or even worse, during finals week) and scrambling around trying to find copies of all those books on short notice…you can order them in advance and make sure they arrive at Penn State University Libraries right when they should–in plenty of time for studying over winter break!
How to do I pre-order? You can use our website or call us at 814-865-6720 (if calling by phone, please leave an email address). Either way works great! We’ll ask some basic questions about what courses/classes/subjects, etc., as well as how many copies each student needs per book title so that we can figure out what size order would best fit into our budget without costing too much money per unit price point. Then, once we have everything set up correctly – voila! Now enjoy yourself while we take care of everything else here at PSU LibrariesÂ
Borrow & Renew (B&R) is a service that allows you to check out books from the library and renew them online. You can also place items you want to borrow through B&R.
Here’s how it works:
- Go to www.libraries.psu.edu/borrowrenew, log in with your Penn State Access Account username and password, and click “Log In.” If this is your first time using B&R, we recommend filling out your contact information so we know where to send important updates about your account or payment history.* Select “My Account” from the menu bar at the left side of the screen; this will take you to an overview page where you can see what items are currently checked out by others using their library cards (if any), as well as how many items are waiting for checkout via B&R.* Click “Check Out Now” on any item that interests you–this will bring up additional details about each book including its call number (a unique identifier used by libraries worldwide), title, author(s), ISBN (s)
Course Reserves
Course Reserves
Course Reserves are materials that faculty members can request for their courses. A course reserve is a copy of an item not owned by Penn State Libraries but made available to students in the classroom or library setting. Students may check out course reserves for one week at a time and must return them before their next class meeting ends. Course reserves are only available to students in the classroom
The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service is available to all Penn State students, faculty and staff. ILL allows you to request items from other libraries for use at Penn State. The borrowing library fulfils your request and ships the item(s) directly to you or keeps them in their library until you arrive.
The following steps will help guide you through the process of using ILL:
Log into MyPennState using your NetID and password 2) Under the “Library” tab on the left side of your screen, select “Interlibrary Loan” 3) Click on “Request A Document” 4) Enter information regarding what type of document(s), where it can be found at other libraries and when they need this material by 5) Select whether or not there are any restrictions on how many copies should be sent 6) Click submit
