Student Health Insurance
The Ohio State University Student Health Insurance (SHI) is an affordable, comprehensive health insurance plan that covers the medical costs of injuries or illnesses you might incur while attending school here. It’s available to students not eligible for their parent(s) health insurance. The SHI Policy includes a prescription drug benefit and vision care coverage. Student Health Insurance is provided by United Healthcare Student Resources (UHR).
Student Health Insurance (SHI) is a health insurance program for Ohio State students.
Student Health Insurance (SHI) is a health insurance program for Ohio State students. SHI is available to all students enrolled at Ohio State and provides coverage for medical expenses not covered by your family’s private health insurance plan or another third-party payer, such as Medicaid or Medicare.
SHI is a requirement of enrolment at Ohio State University, but it’s also an excellent value! The premium cost is included in your fall term tuition bill, and you do not need to enrol each year; pay the annual premium amount when you receive your invoice from Student Financial Services.
The student health plan has been carefully designed with features that offer protection beyond just coverage for routine services like doctor visits and prescriptions
SHI offers three benefit plans that are designed to fit your needs
The SHI program offers three different benefit plans, each providing varying coverage levels. The basic plan is the lowest-cost option and provides basic medical coverage with no deductible. The premium program offers the most extensive range and has a $500 deductible. Plus is somewhere between those two options; it has a $250 deductible with additional benefits such as vision and dental coverage.
If you do not need extensive medical benefits but want some protection against unexpected costs, Basic may suit you! If your family has multiple students at OSU who will use this insurance plan, Plus might be better suited because it covers dependents up to age 26; however, that would increase costs significantly since each dependent would cost an additional $150 per year (with no maximum). Premium offers comprehensive coverage at an affordable price – ask any Buckeye!
SHI may be purchased during your enrolment appointment in the spring and summer semesters
Enrolment appointments are held between April 1 and July 31 each year. To schedule an appointment, log into Buckeye Link and click the “Student Services” tab. Select “Enroll Now” from this page to begin planning your appointment time and date, or call us at 614-292-7700 if you have any questions about SHI coverage or how to enrol in it!
While SHI cannot be purchased after August 1 (the beginning of the fall semester), we highly recommend purchasing it as soon as possible to kick in as quickly as possible if you become ill or injured during fall semester courses!
SHI can be purchased annually for coverage that begins on August 1 or later
SHI is available throughout the year for coverage that begins on August 1 or later. You can purchase SHI at any time during the year, whether for a semester or an academic year.
Suppose you decide to buy SHI before May 1. In that case, your coverage will begin on August 1 and end on July 31 of the following year (for example, if you sign up in January 2019 and pay for an entire academic year, your coverage will start on August 1 2020). Suppose you wait until after May 1 to sign up for health insurance through SHI. In that case, your coverage will begin immediately and last until June 30 of that same calendar year (for example, if I had waited until June 20 2020, before signing up with Ohio State University Student Health Insurance).
Your coverage will end at the end of each academic year (July 31)
Your coverage will end at the end of each academic year (July 31). If enrolled in SHI, you can purchase another year of coverage through Buckeye Direct beginning August 1 or later.
To renew your student health insurance plan:
- Log into Buckeye Direct and select the “Update Student Health Insurance” link on the left side of your screen under “My Tuition & Financial Aid.”
- Follow the prompts to renew your plan online.
You must have health insurance to attend classes at Ohio State University
To register for classes, you must provide proof of your insurance coverage. If you don’t have coverage yet but want to sign up for the next open enrolment period, contact Student Health Services (614-292-5766).
Suppose you need to provide proof of insurance by the deadline date set by the OSU Registrar’s Office. In that case, they will cancel your registration and prevent future course registration until the proof has been provided. Please note that if an accident or illness prevents a student from attending class regularly during a semester or academic year, their financial aid may be affected if they do not maintain good academic standing while taking fewer than 12 credit hours per semester (full-time status).
