Biomedical Media Group

The Biomedical Media Group is a significant player in Ohio State University’s College of Medicine. They produce content for the school and collaborate with other institutions and organizations across the country to spread important biomedical information

The College of Biomedical Sciences at Ohio State University is a graduate school that offers masters and doctoral degrees in biomedical sciences. Established in 1974, it is one of the oldest and largest colleges within OSU’s College of Medicine. It also offers an undergraduate program in biological sciences.

The College has over 200 faculty members who research various human health and disease topics, including cancer biology, immunology, neuroscience and behavioural medicine. The College produces over 70 million dollars worth of research grants each year

Department and Offices

The Biomedical Media group is located in the College of Medicine and has several faculty members who teach classes. Students can get involved with the department by taking one of these classes. There are also many student organizations associated with the department, including:

  • The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) promotes teaching excellence through professional development opportunities such as workshops and conferences;
  • The Society for Academic Medicine Student Chapter (SAMSC), which organizes social events for students interested in health professions;
  • The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), whose mission is “to improve medical education through advocacy, research & leadership initiatives.”

Education

The Biomedical Media group at Ohio State University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in health professions and research opportunities.

Our Bachelor of Science in Health Professions Education (BSHPEd) is a unique program that prepares students for careers in healthcare by giving them a strong foundation in content knowledge and teaching methods. Our curriculum includes courses such as: “Introduction to Medical Terminology,” which teaches students how to use medical language effectively; “Biomedical Communications,” which teaches them how to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare professionals; and “Human Anatomy & Physiology,” which gives them an overview of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology so that they can better understand their patient’s needs.

The BSHPEd degree gives graduates an edge over other candidates when applying for positions at hospitals or colleges/universities because it makes them more qualified than those who only hold bachelor’s degrees without any formal training in this field of study!

Research

Research is an integral part of the department, and we constantly seek new ways to improve our knowledge base. Our faculty are at the forefront of their fields and work closely with students on projects that push boundaries and make a difference in healthcare.

For example, Dr. Smith has researched for over 30 years, specializing in infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS. In recent years, he’s been working on a new vaccine against the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV causes liver cancer or chronic infection; there are 1 million new cases yearly, resulting in 350 daily deaths! Dr Smith hopes his research will lead to better treatment options for people living with chronic HBV infections–or even eliminate them if we can develop an effective vaccine against this deadly disease!
