The first public institution of higher learning to be established west of the Appalachian Mountains, OSU was founded on February 28th 1819, by an act passed by Congress as “The Ohio University.” The school’s original name was changed to “Ohio State University” when it merged with Capital University (founded as an academy) during its second year.

These include an Honors College at Lancaster; a medical school in Lima; an agricultural research facility in Wooster; Veterinary Medicine at Zoological Research Station near Cleveland; an engineering college at Marion (where most classes are only available online); plus various other satellite schools around Ohio that offer specialized degrees or professional training programs.

The university also offers undergraduate degrees through distance learning programs from locations outside Columbus, such as Cincinnati/ Dayton/ Lima/ Toledo area universities like Miami University Oxford, Ohio, and Bowling Green State University Bowling Green, Ohio
