College of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The College of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ohio State University offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in ECE, CSE, Software Engineering, and IT.
The College of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is one of five colleges within The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University-Newark (RU). The College’s programs are designed to provide students with a foundation in engineering principles and the ability to apply these principles effectively to satisfy human needs while considering social, political, cultural and ethical criteria…
  • The College of Electrical and Computer Engineering was established in 1969 and is one of five colleges at Ohio State University.
  • It offers undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and computer science and graduate programs leading to masters and doctoral degrees in both disciplines.
  • The College also offers undergraduate minors in electrical engineering and computer science.
  • Its research focus includes robotics, artificial intelligence, communications networks and systems architecture; high-performance computing; energy-efficient computing architectures; quantum electronics/photonics devices; optoelectronic materials design; nano photonics device fabrication techniques; photovoltaic technologies for solar energy conversion applications.

Undergraduate

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a bachelor of arts degree in computer engineering. The Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/, accredits the undergraduate program.

Education at the undergraduate level includes:

  • Courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry.
  • Design courses such as analogue circuits, digital systems, and control systems.
  • Core courses include electromagnetics (ECE 305) or digital signal processing (ECE 307).
  • Laboratory experience with modern test equipment, including microprocessors.
  • Electives from other disciplines, such as biology or economics.
  • An approved senior project course where students work on design projects under faculty supervision for one semester before graduation

Undergraduate Admissions and Application Process

Students can apply for admission to the ECE undergraduate program through either the standard or early decision process.

The application deadline is February 1 of each year. The minimum requirements for admission include the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale (or its equivalent). Suppose you still need to earn your bachelor’s degree but expect that you will before enrolling at OSU. In that case, we encourage you to obtain your degree before applying so that we may consider all of your college work in evaluating your application. If you’re still working on earning one, you are also welcome to apply! Our office can provide direction regarding how best to proceed with this goal while still considering whether or not our program is right for you. Contact us at [email protected] if interested in learning more about this option before applying through the regular channels listed below.*

Graduate

The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in ECE, CSE, Software Engineering, and IT. The graduate programs are shown in the following areas:

  • Computer Science (Masters)
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (PhD)
  • Software Engineering (Masters)

The ECE department also has an interdisciplinary program that allows you to combine your interests with another field, such as Bioengineering or Physics.

Graduate Admissions and Application Process

The admissions process for graduate study at Ohio State University differs from the undergraduate application, and each program has separate deadlines.

You can find information about application requirements, financial aid options and more on our Admissions website: https://ece.osu.edu/graduate-admissions

Courses

Electrical and computer engineering courses are offered in the following areas:

  • Electrical and computer engineering majors
  • The undergraduate minor in electrical and computer engineering
  • A graduate certificate in cyber security (offered jointly with the Wexner Medical Center)
  • The graduate specialization in applied mathematics, computational science & big data analytics (offered jointly with the Mathematical Sciences Institute)

The Electrical and Computer Engineering College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in ECE, CSE, Software Engineering, and IT.

ECE is a 4-year program that leads to an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Students can also earn minors in Computer Science and Mathematics by completing additional requirements.

CSE is a 4-year program that leads to an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science with an emphasis on hardware design or software systems development (with many other specializations available). Students can also earn minors in Mathematics or Physics by completing additional requirements.

Software Engineering is a 5-year program which allows students to choose between two tracks: one focused on software development using Java/J2EE technologies; another focused on embedded systems design using C++/Qt/Embedded Linux technologies with an emphasis on hardware design principles as applied within embedded systems domains such as robotics & automation control systems.
