New York

Transfer Applicants

Transfer students have already received a bachelor’s degree and seek additional academic opportunities at NYU. Transfer applicants are evaluated in the same manner as first-year applicants.

How to apply

To apply, you must create an application on the NYU website. You can find instructions on how to do this here: https://apply.nyu.edu/
  • Make sure that all of your documents are submitted by the deadline! This includes transcripts and test scores from every college or University attended, as well as letters of recommendation (if applicable). We cannot accept late applications unless they are submitted under exceptional circumstances; however, if you have any questions about these procedures or what materials need to be submitted for us to make an exception, please don’t hesitate to contact our office at admissions@nyu.edu

Application requirements

  • Completed application form
  • Application fee
  • Official transcripts of all previous college work
  • Two letters of recommendation (preferably from teachers)
Personal statement or essay(s) explaining why you want to attend NYU and how your experiences will help you succeed at NYU. Please remember that this should reflect who YOU are, not what others have done for/with/to YOU! This is also where we ask applicants to tell us about their interests outside of academics and how they plan on spending their time once they enter the University as undergraduate students.
  • We look forward to hearing about these things!

Eligibility

To be considered for transfer admission, you must:
  • Be a graduate of an accredited 4-year college or University.
  • Have completed at least one year of full-time study at the undergraduate level.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher (on a 4-point scale) in your last 60 credits of undergraduate coursework (excluding courses taken as part of an NYU program)

Dates & Deadlines

  • Applications open: February 1
  • Application deadline: March 31
  • Admission decision notification: May 31 (for early action applicants) or June 30 (for regular decision applicants)
  • Enrollment deposit due June 30

Documents needed

You’ll also need to submit the following:

  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. These can be sent electronically or mailed directly from your institution’s registrar’s office.
  • Your SAT or ACT scores (if applicable). The University requires that your standardized test scores come from one of the following exams: SAT I Reasoning Test, ACT Assessment with Writing Component, Advanced Placement Tests with a score of 3 or higher on an individual AP exam in English, math and science (biology/chemistry/physics), International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examinations with a score between 5-7 in three different subjects taken at one time (not including languages other than English), Cambridge A Level Examinations with grades AAB-AAA in three issues taken at one time (not including languages other than English).

Application Fee

The application fee is a non-refundable $90, payable by credit card. You can pay this fee online or by mail, but we strongly recommend paying it in person to save time and avoid wasting money on postage. You can also pay the application fee in cash or check at any branch location of Wells Fargo Bank (USA only).

Sending documents

Once you have completed the online application, you will need to send all official documents and test scores to the following address:

New York University

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Washington Place, Suite 12-100 (Mail Code 100) New York, NY 10006

Tests & Scores

The following tests and scores are required for transfer applicants:
  • IF YOU TOOK IT, the SAT (or the ACT) with a minimum score of 1250 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math, a 29 composite on the new SAT, or 1130 on the old SAT. If you took both, we’d look at your test scores to determine which is most competitive for us. We do not require an essay score from either test unless you’re applying as an Early Decision candidate; please note that if you submit a writing supplement from another school with your application materials, we will also review it. However, it does not replace the requirement above!

Transcripts

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, even if you took no courses or earned no credits. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at NYU Steinhardt requires official transcripts for applicants who:

  • Are you applying to the School of Professional Studies (SPS) or Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (SCED)?
  • Are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at another institution.

You should request that your previous institution send your transcript directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at NYU Steinhardt as soon as possible after submitting your application.
