Student Emergency Fund

The NYU Student Emergency Fund is a limited-purpose loan fund that provides financial assistance to students who have experienced an emergency. The fund can help pay for transportation, housing, food and basic living expenses when there is insufficient money in a student’s account or no source of funds at all. The amount of funding available is based on the severity of the emergency, as determined by NYU’s Financial Aid Office.

What is the NYU Student Emergency Fund?

The NYU Student Emergency Fund program provides financial assistance to students who have encountered an unexpected financial emergency. The fund is available to all NYU students, regardless of their immigration status or country of origin.

The fund’s purpose is not to cover everyday expenses such as tuition, rent and books. Instead, it is intended for use when a student experiences a sudden and unexpected event that threatens their ability to continue attending classes at NYU–for example:

  • If you are hospitalized and unable to attend class due to illness or injury if your family member dies unexpectedly
  • If someone steals your laptop or other valuables from campus
  • If you lose your job (and therefore lose access) before being able to find another one nearby where there are affordable housing options available for students like yourself

To be eligible for the NYU Student Emergency Fund, you must:

  • Be an NYU student.

  • Have a financial need not met by other resources such as grants or scholarships (if your family’s annual income is less than $60,000).
