- College of Dentistry
The NYU College of Dentistry is the oldest dental school in the United States, founded in 1839. It was initially called the “National College of Dentistry” and was located within Bellevue Hospital on First Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The College moved several times over its first century before settling into its current home at 290 Broadway, near City Hall Park and the South Street Seaport Museum. The College’s faculty has included many notable figures in dentistry and medicine, including Nobel Laureate Dr William T. Gies (1933–2004).
The College offers a variety of academic programs leading to the degrees of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent), Master of Science (MS) or Master of Medical Science (MMedSc), plus post-doctoral programs for both dentists and physicians with an interest in research or teaching careers as well as a PhD program open to all interested candidates regardless if they have completed an M.S. degree or not!
About
Founded in 1881, NYU College of Dentistry is New York University’s only dental school and one of the oldest in the nation. It is also a public research university, meaning it receives funding from private donors and government grants.
The College offers an undergraduate program for aspiring dentists and master’s degrees for those who want to pursue careers as researchers or professors. Two types of doctoral degrees are available: Doctorate in Dental Science (DDS) or Doctorate in Medical Science (DMSc). Students who earn these doctorates can become specialists in fields such as orthodontics or oral surgery.
Admissions
The admissions requirements for NYU College of Dentistry are similar to those at other dental schools. You must have a bachelor’s degree and either have completed or are currently enrolled in an accredited dental school. The average GPA of applicants is 3.5, but you don’t have to have perfect grades; other factors also go into the admissions process.
The application fee is $75 (as of 2018), but if you’re eligible for financial aid, some scholarships may also be available! Most applicants submit their applications between September and November each year (for admission the following fall).
Academics
The dental curriculum at NYU College of Dentistry is based on the problem-based learning (PBL) model, which encourages students to explore issues in dentistry by formulating questions and researching them through lectures, seminars and hands-on experiences.
The school strongly emphasises clinical education; most classes take place in dental clinics where students can apply their classroom knowledge in real-world situations under supervision from faculty members or experienced dentists.
In addition to the required courses listed above, there are many opportunities for students to conduct research with faculty members while they are still undergraduates; this research may lead to publication in scientific journals or presentations at local or national conferences like ADA/CADOJ Annual Meetings & Exhibitions where they can compete for prizes such as “Best Student Poster” award categories offered every year since 2000 (you can check out past winners here).
Financial aid
Financial aid is available for all students, regardless of their financial situation. Financial aid is need-based and is awarded based on a student’s financial circumstances and academic performance. Financial aid may be in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study or loans.
