NYU is a world-class institution of higher learning with a global perspective on education. The New York University academic calendar is organised into two semesters: The fall semester runs from September to December, spring semester runs from January to May/June each year. For example, If you enter NYU in Fall 2019 (September 2020), your first semester will start at the end of September 2020 (September 2021). The second semester will begin in mid-January 2021 (January 2022).
Fall Semester
The fall semester at NYU begins on September 1 and ends on December 19. The academic calendar includes the dates of all major holidays and breaks, such as Thanksgiving, Spring Break and Memorial Day weekend.

Winter Term
Winter Term is a six-week term from January 2 to February 10. It is not an entire semester, but it does count as one academic year at NYU.
Winter Term classes are typically held during the day and evening hours on Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays and Sundays off. You can choose from over 1,000 courses in more than 50 different departments across campus!
Spring Semester
- The start of the spring semester is marked by the end of winter break and a welcome return to campus. Classes begin on January 8, but you can start immediately with orientation events at NYU Stern on January 6th and 7th.
- There are several holidays during this time that may affect your academic schedule:
- Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday (January 21) – All classes will meet as scheduled except those in which students must attend a class that day; instructors should follow their departmental policies regarding attendance requirements for these courses.
- Presidents’ Day (February 18) – All types will meet as scheduled except those in which students must attend a class that day; instructors should follow their departmental policies regarding attendance requirements for these courses.
- Easter Weekend (April 20-22) – See below for details about holiday observances during this period.
Summer Session I
Summer Session I is a two-week intensive course that allows students to work on their writing skills. It is offered in the summer, and students can take it at either NYU’s main campus in New York City or its satellite campus in Paris, France.
Summer Session I offers students serious about honing their craft a variety of writing workshops: fiction and nonfiction classes, screenwriting workshops, poetry readings, playwriting seminars, advanced courses on journalism or creative nonfiction, and even one-on-one mentoring sessions with visiting writers who have published books themselves!
Summer Session II
The Summer Session II, which runs from July 2 to August 15, is a five-week program that allows students to earn up to four credits per course. Students can take up to two methods during this session.
