What is the study abroad program at NYU?
The study abroad program at NYU is offered at many of our global campuses. The program is open to students from all majors and class years, regardless of their country or financial aid status. If you’re interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, you can contact an advisor at your campus to talk about how you can get started!
How do I apply?
You’ll need to submit the Common Application or Coalition Application and pay an application fee to apply. You can find information about how to do this on their website or the school catalogue.
There are a few things you should keep in mind if you want to study abroad:
- Contact your academic advisor before applying so they can help plan out your schedule with the courses offered by NYU Paris that fit into your major/minor requirements.
- If there is a course conflict between what’s provided at NYU Paris and another school where you have already been accepted, contact both schools’ admissions officers and let them know as soon as possible! They will work together to find an alternative course option for you if necessary; however, remember that due dates for finalizing class registration may vary depending on when each school begins its fall semester (September versus October).
What are my responsibilities as an NYU student studying abroad?
What if I have a conflict with a course I’m taking abroad?
If you have a conflict with a course while abroad, several options are available to resolve it.
- You can take a course at NYU that overlaps with your study abroad program. If this is the case, please contact your academic advisor directly as soon as possible so that they can ensure everything runs smoothly for both courses.
- You can take classes at another university abroad and transfer those credits back to NYU once they’re complete. Please note that this option requires careful planning since different schools have different policies regarding transfer credits; talk with an international advisor before deciding which school would be best for you!
What happened to my financial aid while abroad?
- If you have financial aid, your grant and scholarship will be pro-rated according to the number of credits you take. For example, if your tuition is $10,000 per semester and you take 12 credits (6 courses) in one semester, 50% of your tuition would be covered by your grant or scholarship. You may be eligible for additional grants through NYU or external sources such as Fulbright or other scholarships offered by governments worldwide; however, these awards are awarded independently from NYU’s Office of International Programs and are not guaranteed.*
- You need to check with your financial aid office to see if you are eligible for financial aid while abroad and, if so, how much funding they can provide.* You must pay for all tuition and fees up front before leaving the study abroad program.* Apply for a loan or scholarship from NYU before leaving the study abroad program so that there is less pressure when trying to figure out how much money we need after returning home.
