About Us
New York University (NYU) is a private research university in New York City. It has a full-time enrollment of around 50,000 students, and more than 200,000 people attend classes each year. This makes it one of the largest universities in the United States and the highest-ranked public school in New York City. The school was founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin and real estate developer Ezra Cornell as a co-educational school that would teach religious and secular topics equally; however, after only two years on campus, it was forced to close down due to financial difficulties. NYU reopened again in 1838 with a new charter that allowed women as well as men to attend classes; this time, however, they would be taught separately by professors who were all male at that time due to religious beliefs at that period when women were not considered equal to men or able to be educated like them either.
