How to Apply
Once all these steps have been completed successfully, we will let you know within six weeks of receiving all the necessary materials. We will notify applicants via email when we review their files; those who receive offers will be invited to interview in person or via Skype if they live outside North America or Europe.
Eligibility
To be eligible for admission to NYU’s M.S. program in data science, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- You must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on your last 60 credits (or equivalent). This includes all coursework taken at the time of application, including any transfer credits from other institutions and military service experience recorded on your transcript(s). More information about transfer credits can be found here: http://www2a-nyu-edu/admissions/transfer-credit/.
- You must have completed 12 credits in math, science and engineering courses taken during your last 60 credits (or equivalent). These courses must include calculus I & II; linear algebra; differential equations; probability & statistics; computer programming languages such as Python 3x (Python 2x is no longer accepted), R or Julia 1x-3x depending upon departmental preference; data mining algorithms such as k nearest neighbours classification algorithm.
Application Requirements
- GPA: Your undergraduate GPA is an essential factor in our admissions process. In addition to your overall GPA, we look at your grades in the core classes (e.g., calculus and statistics) required for admission into the program.
- GRE Scores: The GRE is a requirement for all applicants. You must take the general test within five years of when you plan on applying; if you took it more than five years ago, you need to retake it and submit scores from both tests with your application materials. TOEFL Scores: All international students whose first language is not English must submit proof of their proficiency in English by taking either an internet-based test or an on-site examination at an authorized testing centre. Personal Statement: Please include any additional information about yourself that may not be reflected in other parts of this application process, such as leadership experience or extracurricular activities/volunteering work that would help us better understand how NYU can benefit from having someone like yourself join our community! We encourage applicants with solid personal statements but need more credentials (such as high GRE scores) to apply anyway–your personal story could make all the difference!

Documents Needed
The following documents are required for graduate admissions:
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, including those not listed above. If you participated in a university in China, India or Pakistan that does not use the American system of credits (for example, Beijing Normal University), please submit a course-by-course evaluation from an approved credential evaluation service.
- Official test scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System). These tests must be taken within two years of applying to NYU. The institution code for our school code is 4591 and if you are using an F-1 visa we will need your original I-20 form before we can process your application further.* A copy of your passport photo page (including expiration date) and any visa stamps issued by U.S., Canadian or Australian Embassies/Consulates
Test Scores & Transcripts
- No GRE required
- Official transcripts from all previously attended institutions should be sent directly to NYU’s Graduate Admissions Office. If you are applying as a current NYU student, please have your transcript forwarded electronically by the Registrar’s Office or mail it in yourself.
- Test scores (TOEFL, IELTS) are required for international applicants whose native language is not English and who do not hold a degree from an English-speaking country.

The application process is long and tedious, but worth it.
The NYU graduate admissions process is long and tedious but worth it. Here are some tips to help you get through the application:
- Please read the instructions carefully and follow them precisely as they are written. If this is too much work, graduate school isn’t for you!
- Make sure that your personal statement is related to your area of study. If not, then we will reject your application because it shows us that either (a) we don’t know what we are doing here at NYU or (b) our standards are so high that even when someone does meet them perfectly, we still think there might be something wrong with them anyway because they didn’t stick precisely with our instructions! Don’t worry–this happens only once every few years, but when it does happen…oh boy, do heads roll around here in Admissions Land!
