Policies and Guidelines

The following are key policies and guidelines that govern NYU’s institutional life. Policies can be found in the NYU Policy Library or by clicking on the links below:

Equal Opportunity

At NYU, we are committed to providing an inclusive environment that fosters diversity and celebrates the rich cultural backgrounds of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. Our mission statement includes a commitment to “promote an atmosphere of mutual respect for all in which each individual feels secure in his or her dignity.” In addition to these core principles, NYU has adopted policies prohibiting discrimination based on race/ethnicity (including colour), religion/creed or other personal characteristics protected by law.

The specific statements regarding the equal opportunity for members of our community who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender are set forth below:

“NYU is committed to fostering an environment free from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity; providing equal access to employment opportunities; providing benefits consistent with those offered other employees; ensuring nondiscrimination through its student housing programs; ensuring nondiscrimination against pregnant women seeking admission into graduate programs; protecting confidentiality related information collected during employment applications process including medical information related criminal history records checks required under federal law.”

Protection of Minors on Campus

NYU is committed to the protection and safety of minors on campus. The University’s policies and procedures for protecting children are outlined below:

  • Alcohol Policy for Minors: Students under 21 may not possess or consume alcoholic beverages on University property. Any student found violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary action by NYU or law enforcement authorities, depending on the incident’s circumstances (see section 6-1(c)).
  • Driving Policy: Students under the age of 18 may not operate a motor vehicle while intoxicated anywhere within New York State; however, they may operate vehicles while under the influence within New York City if they hold an instruction permit/license issued by their home state and are accompanied by someone over 21 years old who has held a valid license for at least two years before driving with this student in New York City (i) during daylight hours only; (ii) while wearing seatbelts; (iii) only within some geographic regions defined as “safe zones”

Compliance and Risk Management Program

The Compliance and Risk Management Program (C&RMP) is designed to help the University meet its legal and ethical responsibilities. The program works collaboratively with NYU schools, centres, institutes, divisions and other units to guide on compliance matters; monitor the University’s compliance with federal laws; develop policies that promote effective risk management; respond appropriately when violations occur or are suspected; train employees about applicable rules and regulations; cooperate fully with government agencies investigating alleged misconduct by NYU personnel or students.

Copyright Policy

Copyright is the legal right to control the use of a work. It covers various creative works, including books, music, films, photographs and computer programs. Copyright law gives you several rights over what you create:

You can make copies of your work in any format (including print). This includes photocopying pages from books or articles for your own research or study purposes; recording TV programs for personal use; making copies on cassette tapes or CDs for listening at home; recording music played over radio stations through an audio device such as a tape recorder; scanning images into digital form so that they can be stored on a computer hard drive etc.

You also have the right to communicate your creations (such as musical compositions) using sound recordings made by others (e.g., someone else’s CD). However, if there is any question about whether this applies – ask before making any copies!

Drug-Free Workplace Policy

To maintain a safe and healthy workplace, NYU has adopted a Drug-Free Workplace Policy that applies to all employees, students, and other individuals who work or volunteer at NYU. The policy is intended to create an environment where employees’ possession or use of illegal drugs while on University premises is prohibited; it also prohibits the sale of illicit drugs on University premises.

NYU encourages employees to report any suspected NYU Drug-Free Workplace Policy violations.

Alcoholic Beverages on Campus Policy

Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the residence halls. Alcoholic drinks are also prohibited in classrooms or other academic buildings, except those rooms approved by the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Education (OADA).

To ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn and grow from their experiences at NYU, all members of our community must know what is expected of them regarding alcohol consumption on campus.

Guidelines for Purchasing Alcoholic Beverages for University Functions

The Office of Student Life will purchase alcoholic beverages for University functions. The Office of Student Life must be notified of the date and time when alcoholic drinks will be served and the number of people expected to attend. Alcoholic beverages may not be sold for profit at any event held on NYU property or sponsored by any NYU department or student organization.

Internet Usage Policy

The Internet usage policy applies to all members of the NYU community. It is intended to protect the rights of all users and ensure that Internet use at NYU is consistent with its educational mission.

Gun Free School Act (GFSA) Compliance Statement, NYU Community Members, Facilities, and Vehicles (Effective May 1, 2018)

The Gun Free School Act (GFSA) Compliance Statement, NYU Community Members, Facilities and Vehicles, is effective May 1, 2018. This statement applies to all NYU community members at least 18 years of age and part of the workforce or student body. The GFSA prohibits firearm possession on school property or in a school facility. As such, we all must understand our responsibilities under this law as they pertain to our work at NYU.
