Financial aid

NYU’s student finance office is a one-stop shop for all your financial needs. We work with students and families to ensure their finances are in order and they have the funds available when needed. Our team also knows how to navigate complex issues, including loans, scholarships, tuition and fees, health care expenses, and budgeting tips so that you can focus on your education!

Financial aid

Financial aid is a way for NYU to help eligible students pay for their education. Financial aid can be in the form of scholarships, grants or loans. Suppose you are applying for financial aid from NYU. In that case, you must know how much money your family will be able to contribute towards your education so that we can determine how much need-based funding you may qualify for through our office. You should also know if outside scholarships or grants are available to help reduce the debt incurred during college (such as those awarded through state agencies). If more than these funds are needed, we will provide additional support through loans–which must be repaid upon graduation–or work-study programs where students earn money by working on campus part-time while they attend school full-time.

Federal work-study

Federal Work-Study is a need-based financial aid program that provides part-time employment for eligible students. Federal work-study awards are based on the student’s demonstrated financial need. They are awarded to help pay college expenses such as tuition, fees, and room and board.

To be eligible for Federal Work-Study, you must:

  • Be enrolled in at least six credits per semester or quarter (3 for summer)
  • Have an absolute minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA

Graduate student assistantship

Work-study is a form of financial aid that allows you to work on campus and earn money toward your education. It is not a loan, grant or scholarship but an employment opportunity. Work-study pays for itself by allowing you to make money through employment at NYU instead of borrowing from the federal government or private lenders such as banks and credit card companies. In other words, if you have been awarded work-study funds from us, then it means that we have paid off one of your loans (i.e., Stafford Loans) in its entirety so that now all you need do is pay us back with what we’ve already given you–your paycheck!

Teaching assistantship

Teaching assistantships are a great way to gain experience and make extra money. They’re also an excellent way to earn financial aid, as many universities consider teaching assistantship hours eligible for credit toward your degree requirements.

Teaching is also an excellent way to develop professionally; it helps you build leadership skills and gain confidence in front of large groups of people, which can be extremely helpful if you want to pursue careers in education or business management.

Summer internship financial aid (GRA)

Summer financial aid is available to doctoral students. The Summer Research Assistantship (GRA) program is a full-time position that provides a stipend, tuition waiver and health benefits. GRA’s are competitive, but if you’re interested in applying for one, please get in touch with the Office of Graduate Education at [email protected] or 212-998-7056 for more information.

Loan options for doctoral students (TAP, Stafford and PLUS)

  • TAP is a federal loan that you can use for any program at NYU, including financial aid.
  • Stafford loans are also federal loans. They have different eligibility requirements and interest rates than TAP. However, they are still available to you if you meet those requirements.
  • PLUS loans are another type of federal loan that require a good credit history and income verification to qualify for them, as well as annual contributions from your family member who co-signs on loan (usually your parents).
