Undergraduate scholarships and grants
Scholarships and grants are a big part of financial aid. There are two types: need-based and merit-based scholarships.
Need-based scholarships are awarded based on your family’s financial situation, and the amount of money you receive will depend on how much you need to pay for tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies and equipment. You may also qualify for these awards if you have unique talents or interests (such as sports) or participate in certain activities (like being active in student government).
To apply for need-based grants at NYU Steinhardt:
- Complete the CSS Profile application by January 15th (you can start this process early)
- Apply online using our secure portal before February 1st
Grants for graduate students
Grants for graduate students are available from the university and federal, state and private sources. All donations for graduate students are awarded based on financial need. Some are also awarded based on merit. To be eligible for these types of funding, you must be:
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
- Enrolled in an accredited program at a college or university (including NYU)
You can find more information about how to apply for these types of funding online at [grantinfo. nyu] or by contacting your school’s financial aid office directly

Federal loans to help fund your education
Federal loans are a form of financial aid that you can use to help fund your education. Federal loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students but are not need-based. In other words, federal loans don’t require you to demonstrate financial need to qualify for them; everyone who applies is eligible for the same amount of funding.
Federal loans have lower interest rates than other loans (like private student loans). The current fixed rate on all new Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans is 4 per cent with no origination fee; however, if interest rates rise significantly between now and when you take out your loan(s), those higher rates would be reflected in the future payments made under this contract should it continue beyond its initial term or renewal dates unless otherwise agreed upon by both parties before it.” You may also be eligible for an income-driven repayment plan if necessary based on how much money comes in each month after taxes have been taken out and other factors like having children under 18 living at home full time while attending college full time).
Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students (SDS), an NYU aid program for low-income students with high potential.
SDS has no application fee and is available for first-generation college students
You can find affordable assistance at NYU.
You will find that NYU has many scholarship and grant programs to help fund your education. The university also offers federal loans, including the Perkins Loan Program. If you are a low-income student with high potential, you may qualify for one of the following:
- The NYU Steinhardt Financial Aid Office sponsors an annual award of $800 per year (renewable) to qualified students who have demonstrated financial need and academic achievement or promise. Recipients must maintain full-time status throughout their academic careers at NYU and be enrolled in an eligible program during each semester they wish to receive this award.
- Undergraduates may apply for up to $10,000 per year through our Presidential Scholarship Program, which provides need-based scholarships based on demonstrated financial need; applicants must meet specific GPA requirements as well as demonstrate outstanding leadership potential through extracurricular activities or community service activities outside of school such as volunteer work etc.,
