Getting into NYU is one of the most competitive processes in higher education. The application process is extensive and requires much time and effort from students and their parents. However, it’s worth it for those who can make it through because NYU has so much to offer, including a wide variety of degree programs and world-renowned professors. If you have what it takes to get into this fantastic university, read on!
How to apply
- Apply online at NYU’s website, or download the PDF application.
- Pay the application fee online using a credit card (Visa or Mastercard). The price is $80 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and $100 for international students (non-U.S./Puerto Rico). You will need to pay this fee first to submit your application!
Application requirements
To apply, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has graduated from high school and is at least 17 years old as of July 1 of the year they plan to enroll (you must turn 18 by August 31). You should also have taken the ACT or SAT by December 31 of your senior year (or June 30 if you take them later).
You must submit all required documents by January 15 if you live in New York City and February 15 if you live elsewhere.

Eligibility
To be eligible for admission, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Have earned a high school diploma or GED
Dates & Deadlines
- Application deadline: March 1
- Early decision deadline: November 15
- Financial aid deadline: February 1
- International student application deadline: February 15 (for students applying to study abroad)
Documents needed
NYU requires the following documents to be submitted electronically by the application deadline.
Official Transcripts: You must submit official transcripts from all schools attended, including any international institutions. If you have attended more than one college or university, please submit an individual transcript for each institution.
School Report: Your current principal or guidance counsellor must complete a school report on the appropriate form provided in this packet (see below). Suppose your principal or counsellor needs help to complete this form. In that case, you may obtain another recommendation letter from an adult who knows you well enough to provide information about your academic achievement and personal attributes. The signed recommendation should include a description of how they know you personally and why they believe that NYU would benefit from having someone like yourself join their community next fall!
Application Fee
The application fee is $80 and is non-refundable, regardless of whether or not you are admitted to NYU. This means that even if your application is denied, you cannot have your money returned to you. The fee applies equally to domestic and international applicants–and it’s one of the first things prospective students need to know about before using!
Sending documents
The next step is to send your documents to the address given on the NYU website. You can mail them or email them, but we recommend using couriers such as UPS or FedEx so that they arrive quickly and safely. Please note that some schools require that students’ applications be sent in a sealed envelope, while others accept unsecured packages (as long as they are padded). If you need clarification on whether your school has specific requirements regarding packaging materials, check with them before sending anything off!
Tests & Scores
- The test you take depends on the type of program you are applying to. Most applicants to NYU will accept either the SAT or ACT, though some programs may require other tests. If your program has specific testing requirements, check with your admissions counsellor before registering for a test date.
- If you are applying as an international applicant who did not complete high school in the U.S., please get in touch with us directly at [email protected], and we will help determine which standardized tests are appropriate for you to submit along with your application materials.*
Transcripts
Transcripts are an essential part of your application. Your high school transcript should be sent directly to NYU by the deadline date and in a sealed envelope with your name on it. Transcripts can be mailed or faxed, but we recommend sending them via USPS Priority Mail so that they arrive quickly and without damage.
If you have changed schools since graduating from high school (or even if not), please ensure each institution has sent its official copy of your transcript(s). If you attended two colleges after high school, send us two transcripts: one from each college/university attended! Also, note that we do not accept unofficial copies of any documents–only official copies will suffice here!
