Introduction
Indiana University is a public research university with Bloomington, IUPUI and South Bend campuses. Founded in 1820, IU is the flagship campus of the Indiana University system, which comprises all of the state’s public universities. With over 200 majors, minors and specializations within nine academic schools and colleges—including IU Kelley School of Business and IU School of Law—IU offers students many opportunities to study at one or more campuses.

- The main campus in Bloomington serves about 30,000 undergraduates; it features world-class libraries and museums housed within a greenhouse that covers 1,400 acres just north of downtown Indianapolis; there are also satellite campuses at Fort Wayne as well as Columbus and South Bend

IU is the largest university in Indiana, with more than 200,000 students, 40,000 faculty and staff members and 8,500 academic programs. It’s one of the nation’s top research institutions, with nearly $1 billion in sponsored research funding annually.

IU has campuses throughout the state and sites in Europe and China. The main campus is in Bloomington; other campuses include IUPUI (Indianapolis), IU South Bend, Fort Wayne; Kokomo, New Albany and Richmond (near Indianapolis).

The university’s roots date back to 1820 when the Indiana General Assembly created a single public university in Bloomington. In 1825, another bill was passed that allowed the creation of two new schools—one north of the Wabash River and one south. The north school became IUPUI, while the south was named Indiana University.

Indiana University Health is Indiana’s most extensive healthcare system, with more than 14 hospitals and a network of primary care physicians and specialists. IU Health includes Indiana University School of Medicine, one of the nation’s top-ranked medical schools; its clinical partners include Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, Wishard Healthcare Network, Franciscan Alliance, Eskenazi Health (including Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital) and Carmel Medical Center.
IU Health’s commitment to research has led to breakthroughs in cancer treatment; heart disease prevention; diabetes management; organ transplantation techniques; orthopaedic surgery advances, such as hip replacement procedures that use 3D printing technology instead of implants made from titanium or ceramic materials (which can cause adverse reactions); stroke treatments developed by Dr Richard Jovellanos–who was named “One Of The Most Influential People In Healthcare Technology” by Forbes Magazine in 2016–that allow patients to walk again within days rather than months after suffering strokes due to clots blocking blood flow through arteries leading into their brains.
