INDIANA UNIVERSITY

Indiana University Admission Standards

Introduction

The requirements for admission to IU depend on which campus you want to attend and what degree program you’re interested in. For access, students must provide official transcripts from high school or a recognized post-secondary institution and scores from either the ACT/SAT or SAT subject tests.

What kind of high school degree is required to apply to IU?

Students must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent to apply to IU. If you don’t have a standard high school diploma but have obtained your secondary education through other means (such as taking courses at an online school), that will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The university reserves the right to require a student who has yet to graduate from an accredited high school to take the Accuplacer assessment test. IU uses this test as a means of determining whether or not students have the necessary reading and math skills to be successful in college courses. If you’re interested in applying for admission but still determining if you will qualify because of your educational background, speak with an admissions counsellor at one of our many campuses.

Are the GED and other high school equivalency exams accepted?

IU accepts GED and other high school equivalency exams. In addition to the GED, IU also takes CLEP, AP and IB tests. However, IU does not accept SAT or ACT scores because college entrance exams measure your readiness for college-level coursework.

If you’re still in high school, you can take advantage of an early admission program, allowing students to submit their applications before graduation. This is a great way to ensure all your materials are in order and ready for submission.

Are ACT/SAT scores required?

Yes, IU uses ACT scores for admission to all campuses. The exception is Bloomington, Indianapolis and IUPUI, where SAT scores are also accepted.

  • What are the minimum required scores?

The minimum composite score for admission is 22 on the old and new test versions (or 1050 on the old version). You can view more information about these requirements here: https://admissions.iu.edu/apply-to-iu/.

Indiana University does not accept international or national exams instead of a high school diploma, such as the International Baccalaureate. You must be able to provide proof of having graduated from an accredited U.S. high school with a standard diploma or GED equivalent.

First-year admission standards by campus

Indiana University Bloomington (IUB)

Admission standards are the same for all first-year students. Applicants must have graduated from high school, earned a GED, or passed an approved SAT or ACT exam with a minimum score of 1200 on their SAT and 22 on their ACT. In addition to meeting these requirements, applicants must submit an application for admission by December 15th and pay a $60 nonrefundable application fee.

Students denied admission may appeal their decision by submitting an appeal form and supporting documentation explaining why they believe they should be reconsidered by March 1st of each year.

The requirements can vary depending on what type of degree program you are interested in

For example, undergraduate students must complete at least 30 credit hours at IU and graduate students must complete at least 24 credit hours at IU to be considered for admission. Additionally, all applicants must submit official high school transcripts or a GED score if they still need a high school diploma or GED certificate.

Suppose you are an Indiana resident and have graduated from an Indiana high school with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale (or its equivalent). If your GPA falls below this level but still meets our minimum standards for first-year admission eligibility (2-4), then we encourage you to apply through our Deferred Admission Program so that we may review your credentials further once admitted into college.* You may also be eligible for some scholarships based on your academic record and financial need; please get in touch with us directly if this interests you!
