The University of Illinois at Chicago was established in 1965 as an independent institution by legislation signed into law by Governor Otto Kerner Jr., who had served as president from 1947 to 1955 while it was still called the University of Illinois Chicago Circle Campus; however, its history dates back to 1856 when it opened as a manual training school for veterans’ children on what would become campus grounds today. In 1897, it was renamed Northern Illinois State Normal School when its focus shifted toward teacher training, then again in 1956 when its mission expanded. Finally becoming “University Of Illinois At Chicago Circle” (UICC) before finally taking on its current name just two years ago.

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is a public research university in the Chicago Loop, adjacent to the Magnificent Mile and within walking distance of the Navy Pier. UIC is one of the largest universities in the United States, with an enrolment of more than 28,000 students across 15 colleges and schools. The campus is also home to several well-known museums: The University Museum, Chicago History Museum, Oriental Institute Museum, Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, and Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning & Leadership.

UIC’s academic departments include over 100 bachelor’s degree programs and 200 master’s degree programs offered through its various colleges and schools. These include the School of Social Work, Architecture & Urban Planning, and Business Administration.

Online Programs

UIC has a variety of online programs, including:

  • A Master of Science in Nursing degree is designed for busy adults wanting to advance their nursing careers.
  • An MBA program that is ideal for working professionals looking to earn their degrees without having to commute or relocate.
  • An MS in Biology for those interested in becoming a science teacher and teaching at the high school level. This program offers an option for those with an undergraduate degree in another field besides biology or health sciences; you may qualify if you have taken some upper-level courses related to biology or health sciences (such as anatomy) before beginning your graduate studies at UIC!

Cost & Aid

The tuition and fees at UIC are among the lowest in the Big Ten, but it’s still important to consider how much you’ll be paying out-of-pocket.

Campus Resources

  • Resources for students with disabilities: The Disability Services Office (DSO) is a resource centre that provides support and services to students registered with an IEP or 504 plan. It offers assistance with registration, course planning, academic accommodations and more.
  • Resources for students with children: UIC has several resources available to help you succeed academically and personally while balancing the demands of family life. You can find information about on-campus childcare options and off-site daycare resources in your neighbourhood through the Child Development Center (CDC).
  • Resources for students with health issues: The Student Health Center offers primary care services at no cost to UIC undergraduate, graduate and professional school students who have paid their university fees by July 1st each year, all others will be charged an annual fee of $40 per semester ($80 annually). Services include physical exams; diagnosis & treatment of acute illnesses; immunizations, laboratory testing & x-rays, prescription medications ordered by physicians at SHC or other facilities outside campus such as hospitals or urgent care centres, referrals to specialists when needed (elderly individuals may qualify for reduced co-pays depending on income level). Please note that our staff can only prescribe controlled substances such as narcotics once they’ve talked directly with one’s primary care physician outside UICHC before doing so here, so please bring any medications into our office! Also, please note that we do not provide mental health counselling services nor do we offer same-day appointments unless it’s an emergency requiring immediate attention, such as chest pains, etcetera so please call ahead during regular business hours Monday thru Friday at 8am – 5 pm CST if possible instead 🙂

Student Life at UIC

The UIC community is diverse and inclusive, with students from all over the world. The University of Illinois at Chicago has more than 40,000 students, faculty and staff members. Students can find support for their academic success in one of many student groups and through our Career Services Center.

The Office of Student Life offers a wide range of services to help you succeed during your time at UIC, including:

  • Student groups – There are over 200 registered student organizations on campus, which means there’s something for everyone! Whether it’s playing music together or volunteering in your neighbourhood community centre, there are plenty of ways for students to get involved outside the classroom.
  • Activities & events – From sporting events like hockey games against local rivals DePaul University or North western University, social gatherings like movie nights at Yerba Buena Center For The Arts theater, and cultural traditions like Chinese New Year celebrations–there are countless opportunities each month where you can connect with other people who share similar interests!
