Master of Science in Engineering

The Master of Science in Engineering (MS in Engineering) is an advanced degree program offered at Columbia University. It is a two-year program that you can complete part-time while working full-time or as an intern. The MS in Engineering is a non-thesis degree, meaning you will not write a thesis to earn your degree. However, there are many opportunities for research and coursework within the program if you wish to pursue them.

The MS in Engineering provides students with the technical knowledge necessary for careers as engineers or managers within industry and government organizations; graduates may also choose to continue their education by pursuing doctoral degrees at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies or other institutions such as MIT Sloan School Management Program

Master of Arts

A Master of Arts degree allows students to study a specific topic in depth. It’s a good option for students who want to teach or work on research and those who wish to explore areas of interest. Students can choose a thesis or non-thesis track; the former requires completing an original project, while the latter involves writing several papers based on your studies (which may also serve as coursework).

Master of Engineering

The Master of Engineering (MEng) is a professional degree that requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering. In most cases, students can earn their MEng within two years by completing a thesis project or capstone coursework and passing a comprehensive exam.

The MEng is not as prestigious as the PhD; however, it is still an excellent choice for students who want to work as engineers after graduation but do not have time for additional education beyond their undergraduate studies. Unlike many other graduate programs at Columbia University and other top schools across America, there are no GRE requirements for applicants seeking admission into the MEng program at Columbia University Engineering School.

PhD degrees in Engineering at Columbia University

  • PhD in engineering. Columbia University offers a PhD program in biomedical engineering. This interdisciplinary field focuses on applying engineering principles to solve problems in medicine and biology. Students can also pursue a PhD in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical systems.
  • PhD in systems science and engineering (SSE). This degree program consists of a core curriculum followed by specialized coursework based on your area of interest within SSE and electives chosen from other disciplines at Columbia University or abroad.

There are many ways to earn an advanced degree in engineering at Columbia University. The most common are the Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Both degrees require you to complete a thesis, but they differ in the amount of coursework needed and how long it takes to earn them.

The MS program generally requires two years of full-time study. In comparison, the PhD program requires four years of full-time study plus one summer internship or residency period during which you conduct research with a faculty member on your dissertation project. In addition to completing coursework, doctoral students also spend time preparing for their qualifying exams–a series of oral exams given by professors who specialize in each student’s field–and writing multiple drafts before submitting their final dissertation proposal for approval by faculty members who serve as reviewers throughout this process.
